HTC has announced the launch of Desire 816 mid-range handset at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona. HTC also confirmed that it will launch the successor to the HTC One on 25 March.
While HTC Desire 816's price and availability are still being kept as a secret, we do know that the smartphone will sport a 5.5-inch HD (720x1280 pixels resolution) display and be powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 SoC processor paired with 1.5GB of RAM. It will come with 8GB of internal storage with support for microSD cards up to 128GB, which may just be the highest expandable memory capacity handled by a smartphone. There's no word on the Android version on the smartphone, though HTC did confirm the presence of a brand new HTC Sense 5.5 UI on top.
HTC Desire 816 sports a 13-megapixel f2.2 rear and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The handset ditches the firm's Ultrapixel camera technology, seen earlier in the HTC One and the HTC One Max. The smartphone is backed-up by a 2600mAh battery, is just 7.99mm thick and weighs 165g. HTC Desire 816 will offer LTE and HSPA+ (up to 42Mbps) connectivity options.
Interestingly, the handset is the first HTC device to incorporate a Nano-SIM instead of a Micro-SIM card. The Desire 816 is said to launch in China by next month around 18 March and will be followed by a launch in April.
The HTC Desire 816 will arrive in white, black, red, yellow and purple colour variants, as seen in the previous leaks via the firm's Sina Weibo account. HTC Desire 8 would also be sporting the firm's native BoomSound functionality.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is the latest challenger from the South Korean brand to launch into an ever more crowded market, but at least this time the phone has focused on what users might actually want rather than useless gimmicks.
The Galaxy S4 was a strong phone in spite of the insistence that being able to wave your hands over a phone or scroll with your eyes was a good thing.
The Galaxy S5 takes the DNA of that handset and improves on it in most areas. It's a quiet improvement though, which may disappoint a lot of people looking to see the world's highest-res display and an all new metal chassis, but it's one that at least delivers where consumers need it.

Nokia has announced its first-ever smartphones based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), that can run Android apps and are powered by Microsoft and Nokia services.

Nokia X and Nokia X+ are dual-SIM phones that come with 4-inch 480x800 displays and are powered by 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. Both have identical 4GB internal storage, with expandable support up to 32GB via microSD card, and are powered by a 1500mAh battery. While the Nokia X comes with 512MB RAM, the Nokia X+ comes with 768MB RAM. Both phones have a 3-megapixel rear camera, but no front shooter. They are powered by a 1500mAh battery.

Nokia XL comes with a 5-inch 480x800 display, a 5-megapixel camera, a 720p front camera, 768MB RAM and a 2000mAh battery, while sharing other specifications with its younger siblings.

All three phones come with 3G support and take Micro-SIMs instead of regular ones.

The Nokia X will go on sale immediately, starting at EUR 89 (approximately Rs. 7,500 not including duties and taxes) in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The Nokia X+ and Nokia XL are expected to roll out in these markets starting early second quarter, priced at EUR 99 (approximately Rs. 8,400 not including duties and taxes) and EUR 109 (approximately Rs. 9,300 not including duties and taxes), respectively.

The highlight of the three devices of course is the highly customised version of Android, with its Metro-inspired UI and access to Nokia's own store. While there's no access to Google's Play Store, users can side-load Android apps from any third-party source. Nokia has used AOSP corresponding to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the baseline for its operating system.

All devices come with free access to Here Maps, with offline maps and integrated turn-by-turn navigation, and Nokia MixRadio for free music streaming and downloadable playlists. All devices are also pre-loaded with a variety of third-party apps and games.

Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL come with free cloud storage from Microsoft's OneDrive (earlier called SkyDrive). With the purchase of any Nokia X family smartphone in select markets, people will get one month of Skype's Unlimited World Subscription for a limited time.

Both the Nokia X and Nokia X+ will be available in bright green, bright red, cyan, yellow, black and white. The Nokia XL will be available in bright green, orange, cyan, yellow, black and white. Colour availability may vary across regions.

The Android 4.4 KitKat powered 4G quad-core device packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.26 GHz processor, 3GB of memory and a 13MP rear camera with an optical image stabilization feature to support better snapping.
It’s (yet) another high end smartphone that’s practically all screen, with LG inflating the size of the pane vs last year’s model — bumping it up from the 5.5 inches of the Optimus G Pro to a 5.9 inch full HD pane.
That screen is clasped on two sides by an extra slim bezel of just 3.3mm, with LG touting “an industry-leading screen-to-frame ratio of 77.2 percent”, showing how marginal form factor design parameters have become if makers are shouting about squeezing more screen onto the slab.
The G Pro 2 sports the same rear key controls the company stuck on last year’s G2.  A key placement that’s either wildcard genius or the worst idea in smartphone design history, depending on your view. Just don’t press the phone down on a table and hope it stays powered on.
The new LG G Pro 2 sports a 5.9-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920) IPS display, weighs 172 grams, and measures 157.9 × 81.9 × 8.3 mm - and yet the Korean company calls it a smartphone, not a phablet. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat, coming with an “evolved” KnockOn feature called Knock Code. The G Pro 2 is LG’s first smartphone to offer a high-power 1W speaker, which should make it a multimedia powerhouse. The handset has a 2.1MP front-facing camera, and a 13MP rear camera with LED flash and OIS plus (an improved version of the Optical Image Stabilization which debuted on the LG G2 last year). The rear camera can record 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) video. Other features: LTE-A connectivity, NFC, quad-core 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, MicroSD card support, and a 3,200 battery (apparently removable)

The company unveiled the Oppo N1 globally in September last year. Oppo N1 comes with support for running CyanogenMod OS, which is an open operating system based on Android 4.3 and developed by Cyanogen Inc.

Featuring a similar design to the Galaxy S3, the S3 Neo+ is built around a 4.8" Super AMOLED display, which rocks 720p resolution. The pixel density is 306 ppi, which is very respectable. Under the hood, there's a 1.4GHz quad-core CPU of unknown architecture - we guess it's the dated Exynos 4 Quad 4412 with four Cortex-A9 cores, but it could also be a Snapdragon 400 with Cortex-A7 processor. It's joined by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory, which is expandable via the microSD card slot that's on board.

the battery cover is removable and reveals the dual SIM card slots (3G + GSM), the aforementioned microSD card slot and the 2100mAh battery. The Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo+ weighs 132 grams and measures 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6mm - exactly the same as the Galaxy S3 (with the negligible difference of 1 gram in weight). At the back, there's an 8MP camera with LED flash capable of recording 1080p video.

The dual-SIM capabilities of the Galaxy S3 Neo+ include dual-standby and there's a neat manager available inside Android 4.3 Jelly Bean that handles the switching between the two. The supported WCDMA networks bands include 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, while on GSM, they're 850/900/1800/1900 MHz.

Nokia India  officially launched the Lumia 525, an updated version of their incredibly popular entry level windows Phone 8 handset, the Lumia 520. The Lumia 520 was an instant hit with many consumers for its relatively low price-point which balanced the performance and specification set rather well. The Lumia 525 apparently takes it up a notch.

The Lumia 525 is essentially the same as the Nokia Lumia 520, in that it packs the same 1GHz dual core processor, the same Adreno 305 GPU and even the same 480x800 pixel 4-inch display, with the same pixel density of 233ppi. So what’s changed? The Lumia 525 now has 1GB of of RAM as against the 512MB on the Lumia 520, and now has a glossy finish instead of its predecessor’s matte look.

We got some hands-on time with the new Lumia 525, which Nokia says will run alongside the Lumia 520, for those who are loking for a better gaming experience. Towards that end, the company has tied up with Gameloft, offering the buyers up to Rs. 2000 worth of free games. Playing Modern Combat 4 was actually quite good on the Lumia 525, so people who love to game on their phones would actually like this device.

The phone has also swapped its matte back for a glossy shell. While we personally preferred the matte finish and think that the glossy look isn’t just tacky, but also a fingerprint magnet. However, these shells are interchangeable, so you do have a choice of Orange, yellow, red and white along with a matte black option.

Fourth Generation

A somewhat vague term used to describe wireless mobile radio technologies that offer faster data rates than 3G (third generation) technologies.

4G networks are also more data-centric and based on standard Internet technologies such as IP. Voice service, if provided over the 4G network, is typically provided using a special form of VoIP.

The most common technology worldwide recognized as 4G is LTE.

A less-common 4G technology is WiMAX, which Sprint initially deployed for 4G, before backtracking and deploying LTE instead.

Some carriers (service providers / network operators) - including T-Mobile and AT&T - have used the term "4G" to refer to upgraded 3G networks that provide near-4G data speeds even they are based on 3G technology. HSPA+ technology is the 3G upgrade that enables these faster speeds.

Originally a standard for HD (high-definition) television, 1080p now generally refers to an image size of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.

In television and video, 1080p specifies not only 1920 x 1080 pixels, but progressive encoding, which means that each frame of video include all 1080 "lines" of the picture. The alternative is 1080i, where the "i" stands for interlaced, meaning that each frame includes only every other line.

Interlaced video makes little sense for digital and mobile settings, so most phones record progressive (1080p or 720p) video instead.

1080p is also sometimes used to refer to display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. In that context, the "p" doesn't mean anything, but is still used for consistency with televisions of the same resolution.

In still image terms, 1080p is 2 megapixels.

1080p is higher-resolution (and therefore delivers more detail) than 720p.

A number of 5-inch devices have been launched in the market and it has become quite difficult to choose one from them all. The Titanium S5 Plus by Karbonn is also a member of the 5 inch family and is available under the Rs. 11,000 price bracket. So does it offer enough at the price?

Specifications

The specs of the Titanium S5 Plus include a 1.3GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM, 4GB of inbuilt storage and a microSD card slot to expand your memory. It has a 5 inch IPS display with qHD (960x540 pixels) resolution, an 8MP rear camera, a 0.3MP front camera, dual-SIM capability, Wi-Fi and an 1800mAh battery. The smartphone runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Design and build

When looking for a smartphone in the low to mid segment, one has to usually compromise on either some features or the build quality. The Titanium S5 Plus, quite frankly, has decent build quality; it has glossy plastic all around with some chrome accents which make it look good. The handset actually feels good in the hand as it isn’t that bulky, although it does tend to slip thanks to the glossy body.

With respect to the 5 inch IPS display, we really wished it was a 720p display. The display, even though crisp, lacks a certain punch to it. The glass on the front panel did annoy us a bit as it is prone to fingerprints and smudges. There are the usual sensors above the display along with a VGA front camera.

On the left we have the volume control keys finished off in chrome, the top has the microUSB port with the 3.5mm audio jack and on the right there is the power/lock key (also in chrome). The back houses the 8MP camera with an LED flash and the speaker is at the bottom. Under the back panel we have an 1800mAh battery, two SIM slots and a microSD care expansion slot. The hardware on the Titanium S5 Plus is pretty good which includes a 1.3GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

For a sub-11k smartphone, the Titanium S5 plus is very good looking device. Of course the brand does matter a lot to many buyers, but then again, a lot of Indian manufacturers have been producing some real quality hardware.

OS and performance

The Karbonn Titanium S5 Plus runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with a custom layer on top which includes options for customizing the UI via themes, wallpapers, fonts and more. The handset handles the OS pretty well and we didn’t see any issues in the response time or any lags in the overall performance. Multitasking didn’t show any issues either as we were able to run about 8-10 apps at the same time without any crashes.

Battery test showed that the battery backup on the smartphone is pretty decent. We ran a full HD video for one hour (full brightness and connected to Wi-Fi) and found a battery loss of 22% which translates to 4.5 hours of battery backup on continuous full HD video playback.

Camera

The 8MP camera on the Titanium S5 Plus which is capable of taking full HD videos. The colours and sharpness are not up to the mark, and low light performance takes a toll on the camera as it seems there is no noise reduction. There is a zero-shutter delay option and a nice burst mode which is quite handy. Pictures in bright conditions are fairly good, but again lack a bit of crispness.

Conclusion

Good in price range of 10k to 11k

While Motorola is not yet ready to divulge the exact price of the device before the launch, William Moss, director of corporate communication at Motorola Mobility, said "it is going to be price competitive... if you look at what the device offers, the kind of responsiveness and performance it has, Moto G will be competitive with its peers."

In the US the phone is officially priced at $179 and $199 for the unlocked versions.

Motorola has roped in a distribution partner for the Moto G launch in India. "Right now our plan is to announce Moto G in India with a partner in the last week of January," said Steve Sinclair, vice president of global marketing at Motorola Mobility.

Moto G, which was launched in the last months of 2013 in several markets, including Brazil, is a phone aimed at price-conscious buyers. According to Sinclair the device follows up on the philosophy of Google, which acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012.

"Google's mission is to connect as many people as possible to connect to internet... Motorola is a hardware manifestation of this goal. We want to build devices that connect millions of new users to internet and want to do it in a way that doesn't compromise quality of products and user experience," he said. "Moto G is for people who want a device like Galaxy S4 or iPhone or even Moto X but either they don't want to pay the high price for these devices or can't afford them."

Moto G is a phone with 4.5-inch screen that has a 720P resolution. It is powered by a middle-of-line quad-core processor running at 1.2GHz. The device comes with 8GB and 16GB storage and has 1GB RAM. The primary camera can shoot images in 5MP while the secondary camera is good for 1.3MP images. The phone is one of the few available Android devices that run KitKat 4.4.2, the latest version of the mobile OS.

The big draw for Moto G is its good performance, considering its supposedly low price, and availability of fast Android updates.

Sinclair said that one of the reasons why Motorola could promise regular updates was because Moto G was using basic version of the OS. "One of the reasons we can provide fast updates is because we start with basic Android in our phones. This gives us a lot of flexibility and lot ability to speed up updates. Not laying unnecessary stuff on top Android allows us to push updates faster. And that we believe it is of incredible value to consumers," he said. In comparison, most of the phones sold by Samsung, Sony, LG, Huawei, Gionee, Lenovo and others use heavily modified user interface on the top of Android.

After its acquisition by Google, Motorola is focussing on creating lower-priced handsets. "We are keeping the price of Moto G low because that is what we choose to do. We want to make money on these phones... we are not losing money. But we also want to deliver lots of value to consumers," said Sinclair. "In future consumers are going to be very discerning about what they are paying for a phone. It is hard to say if others are going to follow the similar low-price model but we will stick to our strategy."

Apple is set to relaunch the 8GB version of the iPhone 4 in the Indian market after losing sales and market share in the middle segment to rival Samsung in the last quarter after pulling out the model as part of a global strategy.

The US company, pressing hard to raise its market share in India, will price the device at around 15,000 through buyback and EMI schemes compared with its old retail price of Rs 26,500, Apple's four top trade partners in India said requesting anonymity due to confidentiality clauses. The model launched three years ago has been succeeded by the 4S, 5, 5c and 5s, the last of which starts at Rs 53,500.

Since Apple stopped production of the iPhone 4 last August-September, the company is likely to source unsold inventory of the model from around the globe for the Indian market. However, this could not be independently verified.

"While there is still a latent demand for the iPhone 4 due to its attractive price in India, the model has lost favour in matured markets and hence it may not make sense for Apple to start fresh production since it follows economies of scale," said a senior executive at a top electronic retail chain.

An email sent to the Apple spokesperson at regional headquarters in London did not elicit any response until press time on Monday.

The company's decision to stop selling the 8GB iPhone 4 in the last quarter to push its latest devices helped the company gain value share but meant ceding ground in unit sales, with the 5c not reaching expected numbers and the company having no presence in the sub- 30,000 segment. "Apple's iPhone 4 8GB model used to rank amongst the top three selling models by unit sales and fight neck and neck with Samsung, but with its exit the company lost much ground," said a senior executive at a top electronic retail.

In his chain, which has more than a hundred stores, the iPhone4 used to account for almost 15-20% of sales compared with Samsung's 50% in the Rs15,000- Rs 20,000 segment, he said. Now Samsung has more than 70% share.

Apple's market share in the Indian smartphone market peaked to more than 4% in October-December 2012 and January-March 2013 before dwindling to 1.4% in October 2013, according to CMR data. Samsung's share, in contrast, rose to 42% from 33% in the same period.

Another senior executive with a leading cellphone retail chain said Apple's two distributors, Redington and Ingram Micro, have sounded the trade out about a big relaunch of the iPhone4 8GB model as early as next week so that the company can take advantage of a Republic Day sales bump.

"However, inventory is yet to enter the stores," the executive said.

Ubuntu Phones are expected to be launched this year according to Canonical community manager Juno Bacon. He implied that Ubuntu devices will be launched exclusively for some regions and carriers and unlocked smartphones will be made available online soon.

The company has posted a few demos of the Ubuntu Phone OS on its site. According to Canonical, the interface has unique features for navigation. The OS uses Thumb gestures for navigation- users can swipe in from the four different edges of the screen to switch between apps and search for content. Swipes from the right will take you back through the apps you're running and swipe from the left side of the screen brings up your favorite apps.

From a design perspective, Ubuntu has a dynamic home screen experience that's different from Windows Phone, Android, and iOS. The OS is more focused around used content including contacts you've spoken to recently, and frequently used apps. According to Canonical Ubuntu phones will have their own voice commands built-in and will work in any application. The phones will be dockable with a keyboard, monitor and mouse.

New Galaxy products unveiled by Samsung at CES 2014 herald a year when the company will establish its tablet leadership, the company claims

Samsung has unveiled two new tablets that aim to be as good for work as they are for play, and claimed that in 2014 it will take over leadership in the category from Apple.

The South Korean company revealed the NotePro and TabPro at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, showing a new interface that is based on Google’s Android, but is the firm’s most bespoke version of the operating system yet.

One Galaxy NotePro, offering a 12.2” screen, and three TabPros, at 8.4”, 10.1” and 12.2”, will go on sale in the UK later this year. The company claims the new portfolio “redefines what a tablet can do”.

The 12.2” devices will be the largest mainstream tablets available, and offer a full HD display.

Samsung claims the new "Magazine" user interface makes the tablet more personalisable than previous versions of Android, using a 16:10 screen ratio and displaying news and social media updates within the homescreen, if required.

The new tablets will also be aimed at business users by being able to display four applications simultaneously, rather than the current two.

The NotePro, like existing Galaxy Note models, will also feature the S Pen stylus, while both new models will include Remote PC software to access computers from anywhere in the world, and the WebEx conferencing software.

Simon Stanford, vice-president of Samsung UK and Ireland’s IT & Mobile Division, said “We created the Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO series to kick off a year in which Samsung truly establishes its leadership in the tablet market. This new line offers the best in media consumption and productivity, combining the industry’s best viewing experience in a tablet with Samsung’s award-winning design legacy.”

He added “The Samsung Galaxy NotePRO and TabPRO demonstrate our commitment to providing our customers with an extraordinarily versatile product, further extending their digital experience into everyday life than ever before.”

iphone 4.7 inch and 5.7 inches 2014

Apple will reportedly launch bigger iPhones this year, with displays that measure both 4.7 and 5.7 inches diagonallys, C Technology said on Chinese social network Weibo. The information apparently comes from unnamed Foxconn executives, who supposedly said that Apple will make a “one-time exception” this year by launching two new iPhones with bigger displays. The bigger iPhone models should also come with biometric features such as the Touch ID fingerprint scanner that’s already found in the current iPhone 5s flagship.
While it obviously can’t be confirmed at this time, this new rumor echoes previous reports that suggested Apple is working on iPhone “phablets” that will debut this year in order to take on similar devices from the competition. However, it’s not clear what size screens the iPhone phablets will have.
In early September, The Wall Street Journal said the company is testing iPhone designs with screens up to 6 inches, although the size was then disputed by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who said the device would likely have a display measuring anywhere from 4.5 to 5 inches. A DisplaySearch analyst in early October said that Apple is testing 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhone displays, with Cantor Fitzerald’s Brian White also saying a few days later that the 2014 iPhone may have a display that “could approach 5 inches.”
Bloomberg then followed in November, writing that Apple will launch 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones this year. Finally, the same C Technology site said in December that Apple may be testing an iPhone 6 prototype with a 4.9-inch display.
